BEAVERCREEK — Police have warned about a new wrinkle in an ongoing scam where callers impersonate officers.

The Beavercreek Police Department said in a social media post that scammers are impersonating a police captain.

Callers try to intimidate residents by claiming that they have been identified in connection with serious crimes. This includes internet crimes against children, according to the social media post.
The scammers then demand payment to avoid arrest.
The Beavercreek Police Department emphasized that officers will never demand money over the phone to resolve a criminal investigation, warrant, charge, or arrest.
Police said people should not purchase gift cards, send cryptocurrency, wire money, or disclose financial details to clear allegations, the social media post said.
They highlighted several key red flags associated with these fake calls.
It includes pressure to keep the conversation secret, requests for Social Security numbers or bank passwords, and insistence that the recipient stay on the line while making a payment.
